Scholarship
Scholarship plays a crucial role in the research and development of dentistry and medicine. I'm grateful to the research administration and my colleagues for allowing me to research laser-sintered and cast chromium cobalt alloy at the International Academy of Dental Research (IADR) in 2022. I've collaborated with Dr. Nicholas Ostrander and Dr. Ahmad Fard in this research. We presented the research abstract at the IADR. The international research community received it well.
In the international community, The Dalai Lama Trust in Washington, DC, has given me two significant scholarships to conduct research and education in the United States. I have completed research on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) and radiology training at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill (UNC). I'm paying forward to the Himalayan refugee children and underserved communities for global healthcare and education.
The UNC honored me with the Beyond Excellence Award in Research and Scholarship in 2018. My team and I have published a research paper on extraoral bitewing radiographs in the Journal of American Dental Education (JADA) to detect bone loss. Planmeca, Chicago, USA, funded this research. The results of this research have positively impacted dental practice in the world. At Detroit Mercy Dental, we use extra-oral bitewing radiographs to avoid unnecessary radiation exposure for maxillary and mandibular posterior teeth radiographs. Many private practitioners have adopted this new method of acquiring complete mouth radiographs in North America, Europe, Brazil, and India.
In India, I presented a paper on a severe form of acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis (ANUG), precancerous lesions, and conditions at the Indian Academy of Oral Medicine and Radiology (IAOMR). The IAOMR leadership invited me to present on CBCT Image Guided Radiotherapy at Chandigarh in 2012. I gave a scientific paper and poster on Myofascial Pain Dysfunction Syndrome – Pain Control at the National Postgraduate Convention in Oral Medicine and Radiology in 2011. Saveetha University invited me to present on CT / MRI Pathology Cases for Oral Medicine and Radiology Postgraduates in 2022. They have recognized my accomplishments and honored me with the Illustrious Alumnus (https://omed.sdc.saveetha.com/illustrious-alumni). The IAOMR has awarded me the best performance award in the nation at Sri Ramachandra Dental College, Chennai.
I published a systematic review on Arecoline and Copper in the Etiopathogenesis of Oral Submucous Fibrosis in 2012. The Jamaica Ministry of Health and Wellness invited me to give a presentation to their dentists and specialists in 2022. I’m submitting a manuscript comparing guided and freehand implant surgery to preserve the posterior superior alveolar canal.
Every year, the graduate programs (Orthodontics and Endodontics) have been inviting me to give presentations on temporomandibular joints (TMJ) using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and CBCT, respectively. I will continue to explore the research avenues in 3-D imaging, diagnostics, digital imaging integration, and oral medicine for societal benefit.
